Couples Trip - Maui
When Blair and I were in high school, we got this hair-brained idea to set up my sister, just recently returning home from her mission, with Blair's brother. They'd never set eyes on each other and I admit that we mostly just did it as a joke. But as fate would have it, they fell in love immediately and were engaged four weeks after meeting and married six months later. Crazy!
Kearstin and I talk all the time about how much we lucked out in the husband department. They're not perfect, but our husbands are so kind, so sweet, so gentle, hard-working, and so so funny. We both are the luckiest girls ever! One of our favorite parts about being together is getting to laugh about how similar we are as couples. For instance, we both are nervous nellies when our husbands are driving. We laughed until we cried about how we say the same things to our husbands and how their responses to our nervousness is almost identical.
We love to travel together and decided to head to Maui this summer to celebrate Warren's 40th birthday. We were so lucky that our good friend, Mike, actually lives in Maui and was willing to be our tour guide while we stayed there. Here's a peek at some of our excursions.
We went hiking along volcanic rocks and the beautiful coast at La Perouse Bay.
We played at Big Beach at sunset.
One of our favorite parts of the trip was driving along the beautiful countryside and up the mountainside to Mt. Haleakala.
Once on top of the volcano, we bundled up to ward off the dropping temperatures and watched the sunset from above the clouds.
While we relaxed on the beach, Blair hit the golf course. Golfing is in that boy's bones. I love it.
One of our favorite spots was the shops at Lahaina and walking along the boardwalk.
We stopped at this gourmet shaved ice spot and were absolutely blown away. They poke holes in the shaved ice and pour sweet and condensed milk in the holes. Then they drench the ice in coconut. At the very bottom of the cup, they have a secret delicious scoop of white chocolate macadamia nut ice cream. Delish!
Warren & Annabelle's is kind of a Maui trip advisor staple. But don't let that prevent you from going. This magic show is easily the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. We were in stitches the whole night. So funny!
We went to a bamboo forest, hiked to waterfalls, and accidentally baptized Kearstin's Canon 7D.
I'm married to one sexy man.
Next we ventured to the Commando Hike. Apparently it's kind of a local secret, so we felt special that Mike let us in on it. The hike starts out by running through some farmer's private property. Shhh...don't tell. Then you literally have to hike for a few miles up a river.
Once we got to the top of the river, we had to rock climb through a few waterfalls. Here's Mike showing us how it's done.
And then we reached the cave. With small flashlights in our mouths, we hiked through this pitch black cave. The cave had four waterfalls in it that we had to free climb to the top, wade in a pools, and then keep climbing until we reached the top of the cave. Once we go to the top, there was a beautiful lake and waterfall that we swam in. It was crazy! I'll be honest, I thought we were going to die a few times. But we got through with just a few bumps and bruises and had the best time ever.
As we hiked back down the mountain, we stumbled upon these magnificent trees. You get a sense for how huge are were by looking at how small we are below. They were breathtaking.
One day Blair and I headed out by ourselves for a snorkel trip at Molokini Bay. Sadly we don't have an underwater camera, but we saw so many beautiful and colorful sea life while we were there. We enjoyed the blue Pacific water and had a great time eating lunch and relaxing on the boat to and from the island.
No trip of ours would be complete without documenting the food we ate. Some of our personal favorites:
Tacos from Coconuts
Amazing desserts from Fabianis
Gourmet shaved ice
Sansei Sushi
Unforgettable crepes at Cafe Des Amis.
We had such an amazing week together and I'm so grateful we got to go. I'm already planning our next couples trip :) Hopefully we can convince more of our siblings to join us next time.
