A Stroll On The High Line
The High Line was a railroad built by the New York Central Railroad in 1929 to lift dangerous freight trains from Manhattan's streets. Its trains carried meat and dairy products into warehouses and factories along the West Side. It was known as the "Life Line of New York" and for many years it was a vital part of the city's economy. But trucking eventually replaced the use of rails to transport goods and the High Line soon withered to an abandoned railroad. During its state of dilapidation, the natural landscape began to weave wild plants and flowers through the rotting metal. Several years ago, local leaders and investors decided to transform the High Line into a park, rather than tearing down the old railroad structure. Today the railroad still weaves its way through the city streets; It carries not the clanking noise of rolling trains as it once did, but the noise of cheerful locals and tourists enjoying a piece of nature in the middle of a busy city.
My favorite part may have been this wall painting visible from the upper part of the High Line. Love this.
